Punishments in the Olden Time
First published in 1881 this well researched book deals with punishment for mostly minor offences that were not meant to take life but unfortunately some did. There is an early reference to the Ducking Stool in 1467. Other punishments handed down were the Brank with all its regional variations the Witches Bridal and the Pillory. The Stocks was being used as late as 1860. Not long after this date public opinion was growing against punishments in public. The last public hanging took place on May 27th 1868.
