He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2000. In 2015, he was Slade Professor of Art at the University of Oxford, where he delivered eight lectures based on the topics in this book. He has written numerous books, exhibition catalogs and articles on prints, and is chairman of the charity that publishes the leading scholarly journal Print Quarterly.
