John Hamilton Mortimer (1740-1779) was a British figure and landscape painter and printmaker, known for romantic paintings set in Italy, works depicting conversations, and works drawn in the 1770's portraying war scenes, similar to those of Salvator Rosa.

In the early 1760's he became a member of the Society of Artists which awarded him prizes for paintings of subjects from British history in 1763 and 1764. This drawing depicting Shakespeare's tortured King is indicative of his work in the 1770's when his inspiration included figures from literature and history. This is a digital image of an original in the collection of the Folger Shakespeare Library. Size: 8.5"x11".
